Alloa Academy,Clackmannanshire, S2 class

Visited by Scottish Swimming Champion Martin Cremin

Alloa Academy kicked off their Champions in Schools programme with a visit from our Champion Martin Cremin – a Scottish swimmer.  21 pupils from S2 participated as Martin shared his journey of competing at the Olympic swimming trials and his preparation to meet his goal time in order to be able to compete at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Pupils were able to build upon their team building skills by competing against each other in a number of physical exercises requiring them to think about tactics, pace and timing. The pupils enthusiastically participated and worked well as a group.

Sharing examples of his goals, Martin encouraged the pupils to think about setting key goals for themselves. A number of pupils set goals challenging themselves to take up sport, improve their performance and even to get better at equations in maths! Pupils were welcoming and open to participation – praise indeed as one pupil quoted the session had been ‘deadly’. Martin had brought along his Olympic torch and pupils were keen to chat to him about it and have a hold!

Martin is due to visit the school again in March and pupils are going to work on achieving their goals to share their experiences with him when he returns.
