The Community School of Auchterarder, Perth & Kinross

Visited by Squash Champion Frania Gillen-Buchert

Frania4

This year, Squash star Frania has been working with the entire S1 Auchterarder year group as part of Champions in Schools. In her first visit Frania talked about the importance of goal setting in her journey to success. As a result, the pupils have been eagerly working on their 'destination' and 'journey' goals in advance of Frania's next visit. Some of the pupils have big visions, such as becoming an RAF pilot, whilst others aspire to do better in Art or PE.

The pupils took their booklets home over the Easter break to share their goals at home with their parents and carers. Parents have also been tracking the pupil's progress through the monthly school newsletter. The group is looking forward to Frania's next visit on Monday the 28th of April; researching Frania and her fellow Scottish athletes who will be competing in the Commonwealth Games this summer.

Portlethen Academy, Aberdeen

Visited by Scottish Hockey Champion, Vikki Bunce

This year Portlethen Academy have welcomed Scottish Hockey Champion Vikki Bunce to the school for their Champions in Schools programme. Vikki completed 3 visits and discussed the importance of goal setting, healthy eating and maintaining a winning attitude. Vikki used her experience as a Dundee Wanderers, Scottish and Great Britain Hockey Champion to inspire the group of pupils to achieve their goals and reach their personal best.

A few of the pupils discussed their experience of the programme:

I really enjoyed this experience! I learnt how to set goals, eat a balanced diet and have a winning attitude. Vikki was particularly good at telling us how to live our lives in a healthy way, how to boost our metabolism and making us want to do our best at what we enjoy in life. I speak for the rest of my class and I think they all really enjoyed it.

Vikki Bunce coming into our class and teaching us about the values of sport, healthy eating and all about her story was very interesting. I didn't realise that hockey was as interesting as it is until Vikki came in and explained that she had the same kind of opportunity to do this and that was how she got into hockey. I liked how we had the booklets as it made us look at our goals we'd like to achieve. Also, the class really enjoyed the programme as there was a good environment.
