Visited by Rugby Champion Chris Paterson MBE

Prior to the first visit, the children used
the internet to research information about our Champion – Chris Paterson
MBE. They were so lucky as there were many
articles written about him - the children knew they were lucky to get him!
Chris came to visit the children,
introduced himself, and spoke about his career.
He also included activities which involved team work and the children
really enjoyed these opportunities.
After he left the children were on a high. He introduced the idea of personal goal
setting through Champions in Schools.
The following day –
supported by a visit from the Active Schools Co-ordinator – Lesley Patterson,
the children made SMART targets… Some were physical, some were skills-based
(for example making a video of Dr Who, playing a recorder, one-handed
handstands etc) and others related to work in school. There was a wide variety. The emphasis was on targets being manageable,
and realistic, and measurable. This took
time and needed adult support
In the meantime the timetable
has been linked to Curriculum for Excellence, and opportunities for assessment
have been identified:
Every child’s target, and steps leading to
targets, are displayed in class to encourage participation and to add as a
reminder. A copy of each child’s target
has also been sent home to encourage support from parents.
Children are encouraged to
update progress – e.g tally chart, or writing initial timed activities
We have just revisited our
targets to make sure we are all on track.
2 Children wanted to change them as they realised they would be too
difficult (a swimming target – as they don’t have the opportunity to go, and one
simply because they changed their mind).
Hopefully this activity is reminding the children to keep at it. One child had completed her target but wanted
to create an extra one!
